Oakville Horticultural Society Scholarship Guidelines\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Oakville Horticultural Society (OHS) aims to further the knowledge of horticulture,
\n<\/em>stimulating an interest in gardening in our community\u2019s youth and
\n<\/em>encouraging the beautification of both public and private properties since 1957.<\/em><\/p>\n

Partnering with Oakville\u2019s conservation groups, the society also seeks to protect plant diversity in our community\u2019s forest and wetland areas<\/em><\/p>\n

The Scholarship <\/strong><\/p>\n

The OHS is offering a $1500.00 (CDN) scholarship to an Ontario student pursuing a full-time, post graduate, horticulture-related degree at an accredited Canadian university. One scholarship will be awarded annually at the discretion of the OHS.<\/p>\n

Objective<\/strong><\/p>\n

The objective is to provide financial encouragement that will enable students to further advanced knowledge in horticulture by undertaking post graduate studies.<\/p>\n

Eligibility Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n

The scholarship is available to Canadian citizens who have graduated from an accredited Ontario university and are applying for or already studying in a Masters or PhD program in horticulture or a related discipline such as botany, plant science, ecology or environmental science. Other courses of study in a university program may be considered based on a rationale of the horticultural connection presented by the applicant.<\/p>\n

The location of the post graduate university is geographically restricted to a Canadian University.<\/p>\n

Special consideration may be given if a candidate\u2019s residence is\/has been within Halton Region.<\/p>\n

There is no age limit on the candidates.<\/p>\n

Other Terms and Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n

The scholarship is provided for one year only. Candidates may reapply for subsequent support which may be considered by the OHS Executive Committee.<\/p>\n

The scholarship recipient will be invited to attend as a speaker to an OHS general meeting. This is not mandatory, however, the OHS is interested in learning about new knowledge in horticulture. The presentation could be an update on their progress in their research area or any specific horticultural topic of their choosing.<\/p>\n

The successful candidate will be given a two year membership to the OHS.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Application Process<\/strong><\/p>\n

Candidates must submit:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. An OHS Scholarship Application Form;<\/li>\n
  2. A copy of their letter of acceptance into the course of study or a copy of their unofficial transcript for post graduate studies already completed. If the applicant has not yet received confirmation of acceptance, it must be provided prior to the scholarship funds being paid.<\/li>\n
  3. An essay (250-500 words) describing why they should receive this scholarship (i.e. how will it help); and<\/li>\n
  4. The name and contact information of one reference.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Selection Process<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Scholarship recipients will be selected by the OHS Executive Committee, unless a special committee is noted.<\/p>\n

    Selections will be based on points awarded in the following areas: Academic, Leadership, Community Service, Involvement in Horticultural\/Ecological Activities, Connection to Halton Region and the essay.<\/p>\n

    The chosen applicant will receive notification of their selection via phone call and formal written notification by email. After confirmation of acceptance, other applicants will be notified of the results by email.<\/p>\n

    Note: The scholarship may not be awarded in any given year if the Executive Committee decides there are no suitable applicants.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Timing <\/strong><\/p>\n

    Applications will be accepted between January 1st<\/sup> and May 31st<\/sup> of each year for the upcoming academic year (September). The scholarship will be delivered prior to the beginning of the academic year. The successful candidate will be invited to receive their award at an OHS meeting but attendance is not mandatory.<\/p>\n
